A 2022 study from Solutions for our Climate and the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air revealed how air pollution from South Korea’s three coal-fired steelmaking facilities, two operated by POSCO and one by Hyundai Steel, was directly linked to approximately 506 premature deaths in 2021. The study estimated that, if not addressed, pollution from these facilities will result in 19,400 premature deaths between 2022 and 2050, and an associated economic burden of $111 billion. Hyundai has yet to take meaningful action to transition away from coal-based steel in Korea.
